Ballast first, then the carving
Stone parasol bases carved to hold the canopy and suit the terrace.
A parasol base has one structural job: enough mass, low enough, to keep the pole upright when the wind gets under the canopy. Stonegraph starts from that weight and the pole fitting, then carves the form around them.

Eleven bases already photographed, in the garden and by the water
The workshop's garden collection records sandstone bases in an open octagonal lotus, a square palm motif, a round fluted skirt, a stepped acanthus scroll and a fluted melon sphere, a layered lotus bowl on an octagonal plinth, and a white marble sphere on a stepped plinth. Several are photographed in use: poolside under a crimson canopy, on a terrace, beside water and beneath wisteria.
Those pieces show the useful range rather than a fixed catalogue. The same motifs can be rescaled, recombined or replaced with a pattern taken from the surrounding architecture, provided the finished stone still reaches the weight the parasol needs.

Weight, footprint and the pole fitting
The required ballast comes from the parasol maker's guidance for that canopy size and from how exposed the terrace is. The workshop sizes the stone volume to meet that figure; it does not replace the manufacturer's or the project engineer's stability advice. A wide, low base resists tipping better than a tall one of the same weight, so footprint and height are drawn together.
The pole seat is detailed before carving: pole diameter, whether a metal sleeve or a bored socket receives it, how rainwater leaves the socket and how the stone is protected from the metal. A heavy base can also be designed in stacked sections so it can be moved and set without lifting equipment.
Stone and finish for sun, splash and rain
Rajasthan sandstone is the usual choice outdoors: it weathers rather than stains and keeps a warm matt surface around pools and planting. White marble suits covered terraces and courtyards, but it is calcareous, so pool water, acidic rain and leaf staining will mark a polished face over time. Top surfaces are shaped to shed water rather than hold it.
Sandstone should sit in its natural bed, as it was quarried, so the carved face does not spall. Finish can range from crisp tooling to a softer hand-worked texture that reads well close to seating.
One base, or a matched set for a hotel terrace
There is no fixed minimum. Hospitality decks often need a run of identical bases; the profile is machined for repeatability and hand-finished so every base reads the same across the terrace.
For a quotation, send the parasol model or pole diameter, canopy size, the manufacturer's ballast figure, any footprint limit, the preferred form and stone, quantity and delivery location. Export orders are crated around each base's centre of gravity; placement on site remains with the client's team.
Practical answers
Questions before a stone brief.
- 01How heavy should a stone parasol base be?
- It depends on the canopy size, how exposed the terrace is and the parasol manufacturer's stated ballast requirement. Stonegraph sizes the stone to meet that figure; stability guidance stays with the manufacturer or the project engineer.
- 02Can a stone base be made to fit a particular parasol pole?
- Yes. Send the pole diameter and fitting type. The seat can be a metal sleeve or a bored socket, detailed so rainwater drains and the stone is protected from the metal.
- 03Which stone is best for a poolside parasol base?
- Rajasthan sandstone is the usual outdoor choice because it weathers rather than stains. White marble suits covered or sheltered positions; around pools it will mark from splash and chemicals over time.
- 04Can Stonegraph make matching bases for a hotel or restaurant terrace?
- Yes. Repeated bases are machined to one profile and hand-finished so they match across the deck. There is no fixed minimum for single pieces either.
- 05Are stone parasol bases exported?
- Yes. Each base is crated around its weight and centre of gravity. Unloading and placement are handled by the client's local team.
Begin with what you have
Send the drawing, dimensions or reference.
Include the setting, preferred stone if known, quantity, delivery location and required date. The workshop can then respond with the missing technical questions.
